This is the sketch out of my sketchbook where I was thinking about the cartoon Dirty Raking. I wanted to show a sinister neighbor that would show up at the white picket fence. But then I had to find out what about a rake would make it illegal and I thought if the rake was enormous and unwieldy it would make the rake from the mobster neighbor seem tempting to the guy using the small rake.
Ironically enough this last week I read an article in the New Yorker about a movement that is taking place in Orinda, CA about noisy leaf blowers. Man my comics are really topical to the issues of the day.
This is a video I found on Mike Lynch’s blog of Liza Donnelly discussing her process and how she came to be a woman cartoonist which is rare in the industry. She’s got a book called “When Do They Serve the Wine?”

Minus .25% for charging so much for beer, shots and chicken wings. Minus .5% because I can’t find my wallet. Minus .4% because no one has seen my wallet and I swear I had it with me. Minus .75% because Sam will have to pay for the check since someone must have stolen my wallet while going to the restroom. Minus .25% because my team lost the football game.
Yesterday I went to Art Publishing Now Bay Area. I went to Day 1 Summit where they had several break out sessions by various creators of print, online, and experimental publications talk about the industry of publication today. It was very informative at some parts of it, but I mostly enjoyed the Q and A time where an actual discussion took place. The presentations were just a big commercial for the people that are on the panel and I didn’t learn much. This even was put together by Southern Exposure. Some of the participants were Bad at Sports (a podcast), The [Un]Observed (a radio magazine), Arion Press, Electric Works, Little paper Planes, McSweeney’s, The Present Group, Gallery 16, Pop-Up Magazine, Longshot magazine and many more.
I couldn’t stay the whole day, but I think it was a great discussion to talk about publishing today. The big topics that people were talking about was obviously the effect the digital age has on the book industry which are becoming fetish items. Blogs, podcasts, video, self-publishing, digital printing, and websites are all easier than ever for anyone to do.
Click on the image to go to a special 25th Birthday page for Super Mario. I’d like to thank Nintendo for starting me on my path to a 1.3 GPA in college with out which I would have never ended up at Art School where grades don’t matter.
The Royal Exchange Sports Bar hired me to do a custom cartoon for their Facebook fan page to advertise their Monday Night Football specials. You can check it out by clicking on the cartoon and going to their Facebook page or clicking here.
I am volunteering at the Charles M. Schulz Museum in Santa Rosa California this Saturday where 16 cartoonists will be attending to help celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the Peanuts comic strip. The Sacramento Bee is reporting that the cartoonists that will be on hand will be Brent Anderson, Michael Capozzola, Alexis Fajardo, Brian Fies, Shaenon Garrity, Debbie Huey, Greg Knight, Jonathan Lemon, Brian Narelle, Thien Pham, Lark Pien and Frank Roberson. Headlining is the creator of “Bizarro” Dan Piraro who is this year’s winner of the National Cartoonists Society’s Reuben Award for cartoonist of the year.
It should be a fun time. More information about the museum check out SchulzMuseum.org
